Wireless headphones are a device through which you can listen to audio anywhere. But how do they work and what methods are used to connect to the phone? The article contains tips on how to properly use wireless headphones.
Wireless headphone design
They are almost indistinguishable from ordinary ones, apart from the fact that all information is transmitted “over the air.” Gadgets need batteries to receive and process signals. Before you start using wireless headphones, you should make sure that the main device has the same technologies as the headphones, otherwise, they will not work.
The only major difference between wireless and conventional models is the presence of a battery and a signal receiver.
Data transfer methods
Wireless headphones are connected to the main device using one of the methods below:
- via Bluetooth;
- using radio waves;
- via the infrared port;
- using Wi-Fi;
- via NFC, like the Sony WH-CH500.
Each of these connection technologies is described in more detail below.

One of the most popular types of connection, which is present in the lion’s share of wireless headphones.
The pairing mechanism is simple:
- Turn on bluetooth on the connected device and headphones.
- Search for hardware on smart / PC.
- Find headphones in the list.
- Confirm the connection.
Before you start using wireless bluetooth headphones, you should check the presence of Bluetooth on the main device. In devices on Android and IOS, the technology is present by default, so you just need to go to the data transfer settings and turn it on.
But in the PC, you need to check the presence of Bluetooth by finding information about the device on the manufacturer’s website or by opening the device manager. If the portal shows the presence of bluetooth, but it is not on the computer, you should download the necessary drivers from the manufacturer.
The computer will then be ready for use.
When connected from the main device, an FM wave of a certain frequency should go, while the headphones will work as a signal amplifier. On average, the range of the headphones fluctuates in the range of 100-150 meters. They are not afraid of any interference, except for reinforced concrete.
The only major disadvantage of radio headphones is that a small part of devices can transmit sound using radio waves.

The audio source emits a pulsating signal, while the headphones have a receiver that amplifies it and reproduces it to the user. They work within a radius of 10 m from the source, if there are no obstacles in the way. Such headphones practically do not produce, since they distort the sound in the presence of interference, which is why they are used only for conversations and listening to audiobooks.
Devices are connected via a router or directly if the headphones have a “modem mode”. Wi-Fi headphones transmit audio without compression, which will appeal to Hi-Fi audio lovers. A feature of this connection is the ability to connect 2 pairs of headphones at the same time.
A connection method that is not yet very common. To connect, you need to turn on the NSF function on the gadgets and put the headphones on the main device. Accessories are connected automatically, most often via Bluetooth.
The only drawback is that they can only be connected if the devices are within a few centimeters of each other.

The table below summarizes the key differences between the above technologies.
How to connect wireless headphones
The process of connecting and using wireless headphones for technology is identical. But there are small differences when connecting with different types of devices, which are worth talking about.
To the phone
Smartphones most often work via NFC, Bluetooth, such as when connected to 2E RainDrops True Wireless, as well as Wi-Fi. Almost no one transmits audio via infrared and radio waves.
When connecting via NFC, it is enough to turn on the function on the devices – then the devices will give a command to connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
The mechanism for connecting headphones via Bluetooth was described above, and the connection via Wi-Fi practically does not differ from it. The algorithm for connecting headphones and a phone via Wi-Fi will be as follows:
- Turn on the headphones and press the button responsible for distributing Wi-Fi. The module will not transmit the Internet, since it serves exclusively as a communication channel for two devices.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on your phone and connect to the headphone network. As a rule, its name consists of the phrase “Brand-Model”.
- Enter your password. As a rule, it is indicated in the instructions. Then it can be changed in the phone.

To laptop / computer
Connecting to a computer is slightly different from how it happens with a phone. Not all computers have Bluetooth or WiFi modules – they may not be present in older models or hand-built PCs. First of all, you need to check for their presence.
It was already described above how to check the presence of Bluetooth on a PC – the situation is different with Wi-Fi. In laptops or assembled PCs, just go to the manufacturer’s website to find out about the availability of the module. If it is not there, you should purchase an external Wi-Fi, which will be connected to the computer via a USB connector.
If the instruction says that this function is available, but in reality it is absent, you need to try to launch it using one of the methods suggested below.
With the help of the manufacturer
One of the easiest ways to solve the problem, for which you need:
- Go to the manufacturer’s website.
- Find a driver for the device (enter the same name as in its passport).
- Install it and restart your PC for the update to take effect.
Via device manager
The method is more complicated, but it will suit those who do not have the opportunity to find the PC documentation or those who assembled it on their own.
- Go to the device manager by pressing “Win + R”.
- Write down the combination “devmgmt.msc”.
- Find a network adapter that has “Wireless”, “Wi-Fi” or “802.11” in its name.
- Press the right mouse button and go to “Properties”.
Go to “Drivers” and click “Install” or “Update”.
In other cases, the PC can connect only if it has the appropriate module. As a rule, the algorithm for connecting to a computer is indicated in the instructions for the headphones.

What to do if the device does not see the Bluetooth headset
Sometimes the connection is not possible because the main device simply does not see the headphones. One of the reasons may be to blame:
- the battery has run out – charge them at least 10-15%;
- disconnected headphones – you need to double-check and turn on again;
- devices are not synchronized – some gadgets do not have auto-sync, so you will have to manually connect each time.
How to charge wireless headphones
The need for regular charging is the “price” for freedom from torn wires. Most recharging is done via a USB cable such as the Belkin Mixit, however some modern models have wireless charging.
Small “earbuds”, as a rule, are folded into a case, which is placed on charging. On-ear headphones connect directly.
When using for the first time, you need to discharge the headphones. It is advisable to carry out at least 2-3 such cycles at the beginning, and then repeat them every 2-3 months.
It is not recommended to leave the device on charge after reaching 100% of the battery – there is a minimal chance of a short circuit in the network.
If the owner plans not to use the headphones, then it is worth charging them before that, so that the battery does not “go to zero” and after a pause, they work again.
The headphones have a special LED that indicates the charge level. You can find out about the decoding of the different colors of the diode in the data sheet of the device.
Why wireless headphones are more comfortable to use than regular headphones
With headphones like AirPods, you can take your freedom to the next level and make your life easier. The absence of wires is one of the key advantages of the technology. Thanks to this, gadgets will live many times longer – there is nothing to tear and rub.
However, keep in mind that the earbuds need to be charged regularly or they will not play audio.
Buying wireless headphones is an investment that will pay off immediately. Thanks to their convenience, you can be with them anywhere – both in the gym and at a business meeting. If you use wireless headphones for your phone and PC correctly, they will only bring positive emotions.
